Kid Blog
- Very safe
- Able to use for every student
- No need to log in - opens up a window w/ their page
- Controls for teachers to open in classroom, public, parents, etc.
- Gets students excited about writing and reading
- Blog at home
- Blog at school
- Willing to share work with teachers/friends/classmates
- Sparks creativity
- Encourages students to do “personal learning”
- Teaching them about strangers and being safe online
- Blocked sites
- Access to the public
- Posting photos - picture release form
- “Can’t teach a child to cross the street, if they have never done it.”
- Show them what is out there - who are the strangers you need to be aware of?
Ways social media is being in schools and classrooms? What do you do to teach kids to be safe?
- Don’t give out personal information
- Don’t use full name
- Tweet homework assignment, game times, activities, band concerts, etc.
- Facebook page for class
- Students/Teachers cannot be “friends” on Facebook
- Modeling how to do things appropriately
- Kids personal lives vs. school lives
- by example, not theoretically
- Pinterest Boards
- Teaches students how to monitor time
- #Hashtag pictures on Instagram with a specific tag so they can find each others posts and examples.
What about the kids/families that don’t have access?
- Digital equity - “Extra credit if you look this up online.” - reward socioeconomic status
- Never use for a primary access for assignments and notifications
Use of a blog in the classroom:
- Get feedback from peers
- Teachers sharing information (homework assignments, classroom updates)
- Getting information out (to students or parents)
- Using hashtags to find similar subjects, links, other information
- Discussion with quick “participation points”
- Sharing classroom activities with parents
